 Project Descriptions

Short Short Stories                                           Code P12                                                SATURDAY

Rediscover the art of the short story, as it appears in literature, comics, film, and cartoons.   This is an opportunity to engage in some creative thinking, to discover what is, in fact, the shortest short story and to explore and invent new styles, finding inspiration from, amongst other things, the area and objects around us.

A Brief History of Games                                Code S23                                               SATURDAY

Why do we play?  This is a question that has puzzled psychologists for centuries.  Play is an essential aspect of our daily routine but what is it about play that makes this so?  In this project you’ll address these questions whilst also learning about the types of game we indulge in and whether juxtaposing ‘work’ and ‘play’ is really necessary.  You’ll witness how games have changed, with special reference to the transition from tabletop to the virtual.  You’ll also have the opportunity to make a game and, time permitting, participate in one another’s play design.

Designing an Evilometer                                 Code Y22                                                 SATURDAY

Is it better for a thin man in a lifeboat to give up his seat, or to throw a fat man overboard to make room for two? Is letting someone fall down an open lift shaft any different to giving him a gentle shove?  Grapple with ethical questions such as these with the help or hindrance of philosophers, gods and sages down the ages.  Then design and name your own moral philosophy ready for a final showdown.  Philosophy. Not for the squeamish.

Getting to Grips with Chaucer                       Code K14                                                     SUNDAY

Chaucer –  “the first modern English storyteller”; “the funniest characters . . . the best plots”;  “brilliant satirist”  but undeniably hard to understand.  Until now. . . .  Spend a day getting to grips with Chaucer: learn to speak, read and write in Middle English and then find out why 600 years might be almost irrelevant.

Reading Sideways                                           Code T23                                                     SUNDAY

When analysing literature we are faced with the problem of how to read and understand it in terms of the text itself, the intended meaning, and the (perhaps not so intentional) meaning that underlies this.  In this project we’ll be exploring methods of reading, including (but not limited to) psychobiography, character analysis, and more structural methods of reading a text.  You’ll have to contribute your own ideas on the pros and cons of each method and will either write and analyse your own creative piece or use a piece of literature of your choice for analysis.

Crick Crack                                                      Code P23                                                      SUNDAY

Shortly after someone discovered fire, someone else got bored with staring at it and invented storytelling.  Learn how to draw in your audience using voice, gesture and language, and how to use pictures to aid memory so that you can tell a tall tale, sad saga, or forbidding fable without writing a word.  No need to bring a story with you, as a wide range will be available.

SPONSORSHIP is available to parents where there is financial hardship.  Please contact Gabbitas Tomorrow’s Achievers (Patricia Morse 0207 734 0161) or The Potential Trust (Anna Comino-James 01844 351666) for more details.

CARE OF EQUIPMENT:  It is standard practice in LEA-owned Residential Centres that damage to or tampering with equipment, property, decoration, furniture & fittings, etc., whether accidental or intentional, will be paid for by the student(s) concerned.

PARENTAL CONSENT:  I agree to authorize members of staff to approve such medical treatment for my child as is deemed necessary in an emergency.  Any medical condition, from which, to my knowledge, my child is suffering, is described on a separate sheet as are any medical requirements (such as drugs or other treatment).  I undertake to inform the organiser likewise of any such condition which may arise in the period between the return of this form and the date of the course.  I agree, in so far as they cannot be recovered under any policy of insurance, to reimburse the organiser for any costs and expenses reasonably incurred or disbursed on my child’s behalf during the course.

I have read and accept the above Student Contract & Parental Consent.
